Are Wearables HSA Eligible? Whoop, Garmin, Apple Watch, Fitbit and More (2026)

Whoop, Garmin, Apple Watch, Fitbit, Coros, Amazfit, Wahoo, Oura — every major fitness wearable can be FSA/HSA reimbursable with a Letter of Medical Necessity. Here's the brand-by-brand walkthrough on what qualifies and what your LMN needs to say.

Smartwatch on a wrist showing health metrics

Hi, I'm Anthony, co-founder at Burst. Wearables sit in a unique IRS category because they're the closest thing to consumer-grade medical devices a lot of people own.

Short answer. A Whoop strap, Garmin watch, Apple Watch, Fitbit, Coros, Amazfit, or Wahoo device can be FSA or HSA reimbursable with a Letter of Medical Necessity. The IRS treats fitness trackers as dual-purpose under Publication 502 and Notices 2006-69 and 2007-2: consumer electronics by default, medical equipment when documented as part of managing a specific health context. Oura Ring is on a slightly different path — see our dedicated Oura guide. The wearable categories that reimburse most consistently are heart-rate-variability monitors, sleep trackers, and continuous-glucose-adjacent devices when paired with a documented health condition. Below is the brand-by-brand fit.

If that already describes you, the request takes about three minutes and you can skip the rest of this guide.

Brand-by-brand fit

  • Whoop. Strap-only HRV and recovery tracker. Strong fit for cardiovascular reconditioning, anxiety management with documented stress monitoring, and overtraining contexts.

  • Garmin. Multi-sport watches with detailed cardiac metrics. Strong fit for cardiac rehabilitation, hypertension management, post-cardiac event recovery.

  • Apple Watch. ECG, blood oxygen, and (Series 9+) AFib history. Strong fit for atrial fibrillation monitoring, cardiac rehab, fall detection in older adults.

  • Fitbit. Heart rate, sleep stages, stress management. Strong fit for general cardiac monitoring, weight management with comorbidity.

  • Coros. Endurance-focused multisport watches. Strong fit for cardiac rehab in athletes, cardiovascular reconditioning.

  • Amazfit. Lower-cost smartwatches with cardiac and sleep monitoring. Same eligibility framework.

  • Wahoo. ELEMNT cycling computers and TICKR HR straps. Strong fit when paired with cardiac rehab on a stationary bike or training plan.

  • Oura Ring. Sleep, recovery, and temperature tracking. See dedicated guide.

What's eligible with an LMN

  • The wearable hardware itself

  • Premium subscriptions (Whoop membership, Garmin Connect+, Fitbit Premium) when the data is part of a documented monitoring plan

  • Replacement bands and chargers when needed for ongoing use

  • Heart rate chest straps purchased for additional accuracy

What's not eligible, even with an LMN

  • Cellular plan add-ons. The watch hardware reimburses; carrier service does not.

  • Branded merchandise. Apple Watch hoodies, Garmin merch.

  • Aesthetic band collections. A working band reimburses; a luxury fashion band collection doesn't.

  • AppleCare or extended warranties are typically not eligible.

Common reasons people get a wearable LMN

  • Atrial fibrillation monitoring (Apple Watch, Fitbit Sense)

  • Cardiac rehabilitation following an event

  • Hypertension management with continuous monitoring

  • Type 2 diabetes management (especially when paired with CGM data)

  • Anxiety with documented HRV-based monitoring (Whoop, Oura)

  • Sleep apnea or chronic insomnia management

  • Fall detection for older adults (Apple Watch)

  • Documented endurance training contexts in cardiac rehab

A few common wearable FSA/HSA pitfalls

  • Confusing the watch with the cellular plan. The hardware is the eligible item. The monthly carrier bill is not.

  • Forgetting the subscription. Whoop is membership-only — there's no separate "hardware" charge. The membership reimburses on the LMN.

  • Submitting the carrier-financed bill. If you bought the Apple Watch through your carrier on installments, submit the original retail receipt.

  • Letting the LMN expire mid-membership. Whoop and similar memberships need a current LMN annually.

Wearable FSA/HSA FAQ

Is Whoop HSA eligible?
Whoop is membership-only and reimburses on an LMN naming the documented monitoring context (cardiovascular reconditioning, anxiety management with HRV monitoring, etc.).

Is Apple Watch FSA eligible?
With an LMN, yes. The most common contexts are AFib monitoring, cardiac rehab, and fall detection.

Is Garmin HSA eligible?
With an LMN, yes. Common contexts are cardiac rehab and hypertension management.

Is Fitbit FSA eligible?
With an LMN, yes. Same framework as the others.

Can I cover both an Apple Watch and a Whoop on the same LMN?
If they address distinct contexts (e.g., AFib monitoring + HRV monitoring for anxiety), yes. Same context, typically only one.

Is the LMN fee itself FSA/HSA eligible?
Yes.
