Hi, I'm Shubhi, one of the co-founders at Burst. This guide is for anyone who owns an Eight Sleep, or is shopping for one, who's heard FSA or HSA dollars might cover it.
Short answer. Yes. The Eight Sleep Pod (current generation Pod 5), the Pod Cover for an existing mattress, and Eight Sleep accessories purchased to support the system can all be reimbursed from your FSA or HSA when you have a Letter of Medical Necessity. Eight Sleep falls into the IRS dual-purpose category — it's a mattress system by default, but with an LMN naming a sleep-related medical situation it becomes a reimbursable expense. The Pod's specific cooling, heating, and sleep tracking features make the medical context easier to articulate than a regular mattress because the technology directly addresses thermoregulation, perimenopause, sleep apnea, and insomnia. Below is the full walkthrough.
If that already describes you, the request takes about three minutes and you can skip the rest of this guide.
What FSA and HSA cover for Eight Sleep
Eight Sleep sits in the same IRS category as any other mattress or sleep system. Furniture by default, medical equipment when documented. The Pod's active cooling and heating, sleep tracking, and adjustable temperature zones make it particularly well-suited for situations where temperature regulation or sleep quality are part of a documented health context.
The LMN is the document that bridges "I bought a Pod" and "my plan administrator approves the reimbursement." Burst's clinicians write LMNs in the language plan admins actually approve, and if our clinician decides a situation doesn't fit, you get a full refund.
What's eligible with an LMN
Eight Sleep Pod (full mattress). The full mattress with integrated cooling, heating, and tracking.
Pod Cover. The cover that retrofits onto an existing mattress for cooling, heating, and tracking. Same eligibility as the full Pod.
Eight Sleep base. The adjustable base when included for medical-context elevation (acid reflux, sleep apnea).
Membership / subscription. The Eight Sleep app subscription reimburses on the same LMN as the hardware while the LMN is current.
What's not eligible, even with an LMN
Branded apparel. Eight Sleep merchandise.
Replacement covers bought outside an LMN window. If your LMN expires and you replace the cover, refresh the LMN first.
Pod for a family member without their own LMN. The LMN covers the person whose name is on it.
What your LMN needs to say for Eight Sleep
Plan administrators approve LMNs that name a specific sleep-related health context and connect Eight Sleep's features to it. The Pod's cooling, heating, and tracking are useful here because they make the connection direct.
Common reasons people get an Eight Sleep LMN:
Insomnia
Sleep apnea (especially when paired with the adjustable base)
Perimenopausal or menopausal sleep disruption (cooling addresses hot flashes directly)
Hyperhidrosis or excessive night sweating
Chronic pain that disrupts sleep
Post-surgical recovery requiring sleep quality support
Anxiety where sleep tracking and quality are part of the documented plan
A few common Eight Sleep FSA/HSA pitfalls
Submitting the financing statement. Eight Sleep often comes with financing. Reimbursement runs on the original Eight Sleep receipt, not the installments.
Forgetting the cover-only path. The Pod Cover is eligible too. You don't need to replace your whole mattress to get an Eight Sleep covered.
Forgetting the membership. The app subscription reimburses too on the same LMN as the hardware.
Letting the LMN expire mid-subscription. Refresh annually to keep the recurring app subscription covered.
Eight Sleep FSA/HSA FAQ
Is Eight Sleep HSA eligible without an LMN?
The LMN is what makes the difference. Eight Sleep is a sleep system, so on its own it's not eligible. With an LMN, it is.
Is the Pod Cover treated the same as the full Pod for FSA/HSA?
Yes. Same eligibility rules, same LMN requirements.
Does the Eight Sleep app subscription reimburse?
Yes, on the same LMN as the hardware. Recurring while the LMN is current (12 months typical).
Can I get the LMN after I bought my Pod?
Per IRS guidelines, LMNs must be for purchases made on or after the LMN request date. So an LMN you request today won't cover a Pod you bought last month. If you're planning to buy soon, get the LMN first.
Is Eight Sleep covered for perimenopause specifically?
Yes — perimenopausal sleep disruption is one of the most common contexts on Eight Sleep LMNs because the cooling feature directly addresses night sweats and hot flashes.
Is the LMN fee itself FSA/HSA eligible?
Yes.
Stop paying out-of-pocket for your Eight Sleep
If you're already paying for an Eight Sleep and you've got a sleep-related health context, the LMN turns that out-of-pocket spend into 30% pre-tax savings. Get yours from Burst in under 5 minutes. If our clinician doesn't approve it, you get a full refund.
