Best HSA-Eligible Saunas and Cold Plunges (2026): Plunge, Sunlighten and More

Plunge, Sunlighten, Almost Heaven, Haven of Heat, Bon Charge — every major sauna and cold plunge brand can be FSA/HSA reimbursable with a Letter of Medical Necessity. Here's the brand-by-brand walkthrough.

8 minute read

Hi, I'm Shubhi. Saunas and cold plunges are some of the most expensive purchases people put on Burst LMNs, and they're also among the most reliably approved when the medical context is right.

Short answer. Plunge cold plunges, Sunlighten infrared saunas, Almost Heaven traditional saunas, Haven of Heat, and Bon Charge sauna blankets can all be FSA or HSA reimbursable with a Letter of Medical Necessity. The IRS treats these as dual-purpose under Publication 502 and Notices 2006-69 and 2007-2: home wellness equipment by default, medical equipment when a clinician documents they're part of managing a specific health context. The contexts that reimburse most consistently are chronic pain, fibromyalgia, post-surgical recovery, cardiovascular reconditioning, and depression with documented exercise-and-thermoregulation treatment plans. Below is the brand-by-brand fit. (We also have a separate older guide on this topic at /guides/lmn-sauna-cold-plunge.)

If that already describes you, the request takes about three minutes and you can skip the rest of this guide.

Brand-by-brand fit

  • Plunge. Cold plunge tubs (Plunge All-In, Pro, Pop). Strong fit for chronic inflammatory pain, depression, autoimmune contexts, and post-surgical inflammation management.

  • Sunlighten. Infrared saunas (mPulse, Solo, Amplify). Strong fit for chronic pain, fibromyalgia, cardiovascular reconditioning, and detoxification contexts in MCS.

  • Almost Heaven. Traditional Finnish-style saunas (cedar). Strong fit for cardiovascular reconditioning, hypertension, chronic respiratory conditions.

  • Haven of Heat. Premium home saunas. Same eligibility framework as Almost Heaven.

  • Bon Charge sauna blankets. Portable infrared sauna blanket option. Strong fit for the same contexts at a lower price point.

  • HigherDOSE infrared sauna blankets. Same category as Bon Charge.

  • Cold plunge accessories. Chillers, covers, and water treatment systems purchased to maintain an LMN-covered tub reimburse alongside.

What's eligible with an LMN

  • Hardware (the sauna unit, plunge tub, blanket)

  • Installation and delivery fees on the same receipt

  • Required maintenance accessories (chillers, water treatment, covers)

  • Replacement infrared bulbs in panels

What's not eligible, even with an LMN

  • Decorative accessories. Branded towels, custom paint colors, aesthetic upgrades.

  • Outdoor decking and pad construction — the tub or sauna reimburses, the patio doesn't.

  • Aromatherapy oils and ambient products. Comfort items, not medical.

Common reasons people get a sauna or cold plunge LMN

  • Chronic inflammatory pain (rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis)

  • Fibromyalgia

  • Depression where exercise + thermoregulation is part of the documented plan

  • Cardiovascular reconditioning (saunas)

  • Post-surgical recovery and inflammation management (cold plunge)

  • Hypertension management (saunas have documented blood pressure benefits)

  • Autoimmune contexts where temperature exposure is therapeutic

  • Multiple chemical sensitivity (specific to saunas in some plans)

A few common sauna/plunge FSA/HSA pitfalls

  • Submitting the financing statement. Saunas and plunges often involve financing. Submit the original brand receipt to your plan admin.

  • Forgetting the chiller. A Plunge tub without a chiller doesn't function. The chiller is part of the eligible bundle on the same LMN.

  • Missing the home installation cost. When delivery and installation are on the same receipt as the hardware, they reimburse together.

  • Letting the LMN expire before maintenance purchases. Replacement filters, water treatment, and bulbs over the device's lifetime each need a current LMN.
