Best HSA-Eligible Recovery Tools (2026): Theragun, Hyperice, Mito, Joovv
Theragun, Hyperice, Mito Red Light, Joovv, HigherDOSE, iRestore, Pulsetto — every major recovery brand can be FSA/HSA reimbursable with a Letter of Medical Necessity. Here's what fits which situation, what your LMN needs to say, and how to get reimbursed.

Hi, I'm Grayson. I run GTM at Burst. Recovery tools are one of the categories where the LMN process pays off most clearly because the brands are expensive and the medical contexts are usually well-documented.
Short answer. A Theragun, Hyperice, Mito Red Light panel, Joovv, HigherDOSE PEMF mat, iRestore laser, or Pulsetto vagus nerve stimulator can all be FSA or HSA reimbursable with a Letter of Medical Necessity. The IRS treats all of these as dual-purpose under Publication 502 and Notices 2006-69 and 2007-2: not eligible by default, but reimbursable when a clinician confirms they're part of managing a specific health situation. The medical contexts for recovery tools are usually clear (chronic pain, post-surgical recovery, fibromyalgia, arthritis, anxiety) which makes the LMN easier to write. Below is the brand-by-brand fit and how reimbursement actually flows.
If that already describes you, the request takes about three minutes and you can skip the rest of this guide.
Brand-by-brand fit
Theragun (Therabody). Percussive massage devices. Strong fit for chronic muscular pain, post-workout recovery in the context of PT, fibromyalgia, post-surgical mobility work.
Hyperice. Hypervolt percussive devices, Normatec compression boots, Venom heated wraps. Strong fit for circulation issues, lymphedema management, post-surgical swelling, deep vein thrombosis prevention contexts.
Mito Red Light. Targeted red and near-infrared light panels. Strong fit for chronic joint pain, osteoarthritis, post-surgical wound healing, seasonal affective disorder.
Joovv. Full-body red light panels. Strong fit for chronic pain, skin conditions (psoriasis, eczema), seasonal affective disorder, hypothyroid management.
HigherDOSE. PEMF mats, infrared sauna blankets, red light masks. Strong fit for chronic pain, anxiety management, sleep disruption, lymphatic support.
iRestore. FDA-cleared laser hair growth devices. Strong fit for documented androgenetic alopecia (medically diagnosed hair loss).
Pulsetto. Transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulator. Strong fit for anxiety, stress-related GI issues, autonomic dysregulation, POTS.
What's eligible with an LMN
The hardware itself across all brands above
Replacement attachments and accessories that ship with the device
App or membership subscriptions tied to the device when used clinically (e.g., Therabody+ for guided PT routines)
Targeted accessories purchased to extend functionality (e.g., Hyperice Normatec hose extensions for tall users)
What's not eligible, even with an LMN
Branded apparel and merchandise. Therabody hoodies, Joovv merch.
Cosmetic upgrades. Color upgrades, premium finishes purely for aesthetics.
Recovery devices for someone else. The LMN covers the person whose name is on it.
Recovery boots for general athletic recovery without a documented context. Lymphedema, post-surgical swelling, or DVT-risk contexts qualify; "recovery after CrossFit" doesn't.
Common reasons people get a recovery tool LMN
Chronic muscular pain (back, neck, fibromyalgia)
Post-surgical recovery requiring soft tissue mobility work
Lymphedema or chronic edema
Osteoarthritis (especially red light + percussion combinations)
Anxiety where the device is part of a documented stress-management plan
POTS or dysautonomia (vagus nerve stimulators)
Seasonal affective disorder (red light)
Documented circulation issues (compression boots)
A few common recovery tool FSA/HSA pitfalls
Buying multiple devices without separate justification. An LMN can cover multiple devices when each addresses a distinct context. "Theragun for back pain + Joovv for SAD" works; "Theragun and Hyperice both for back pain" raises questions.
Submitting the financing receipt instead of the device receipt. Use the original receipt from the brand.
Letting the LMN expire mid-subscription. Therabody+ and similar memberships need a current LMN to continue reimbursing.
Forgetting cross-eligibility. Recovery tools paired with PT contexts often qualify together — physical therapy visits and the home device on the same LMN.
Recovery tool FSA/HSA FAQ
Is Theragun HSA eligible?
With an LMN, yes. Theragun is a percussive massage device, dual-purpose under IRS rules. The LMN documents the medical context.
Are Hyperice Normatec boots FSA eligible?
With an LMN naming lymphedema, post-surgical swelling, or documented circulation issues, yes. Without one, they're general recovery equipment.
Is red light therapy HSA eligible?
With an LMN, yes. Mito Red Light, Joovv, and similar panels reimburse for documented contexts (chronic pain, SAD, skin conditions).
Can I cover both Theragun and Hyperice on the same LMN?
If they address distinct medical contexts (e.g., one for back pain, one for circulation), yes. Same context, only one device typically reimburses.
Is the LMN fee itself FSA/HSA eligible?
Yes.
