Which Gyms Take HSA or FSA? Planet Fitness to Equinox
Chain-by-chain: 2026 dues at Planet Fitness, Equinox, Life Time and 9 more, who has a letter partner, and the receipt your plan wants before it pays you.

Short answer
None of the twelve big gym chains run your HSA or FSA card at the front desk, and that includes the ones with an HSA program on their website. Every chain ends up at the same three steps: a licensed clinician writes a letter of medical necessity before you pay, you pay dues with your normal card, and your plan pays you back out of your account. If you want the general rules on whether a gym counts as a medical expense, read Can You Use Your HSA or FSA for a Gym Membership? first. This page is the chain-by-chain version: what each gym charges, which ones have a letter partner, and what receipt to keep.
The fastest route that works at any gym on this list: get a letter from Burst for $35, join wherever you like, and let Burst file the claim.
Which gyms take an HSA or FSA card at the front desk?
None of the chains below let you tap an HSA or FSA card at the desk for dues. Two of them (Equinox and Blink) route card payments through a Flex enrollment instead of the desk, and the rest either tell you to pay normally and get reimbursed or have no HSA program at all. Prices are 2026 published or reported ranges and vary by location.
Gym | Typical monthly dues (2026) | HSA or FSA card at the desk |
|---|---|---|
Planet Fitness | $15 Classic, $24.99 Black Card, plus a $49 annual fee | No program we could find |
LA Fitness | $29.99 to $49.99 | No program we could find |
24 Hour Fitness | About $20 to $45 by tier | Not through the gym; pay normally and file |
Anytime Fitness | $30 to $65, set by each franchise | Not through the gym; pay normally and file |
Crunch Fitness | About $10 to $35 by tier | Not through the gym; pay normally and file |
Gold's Gym | About $10 to $60, set locally | Not through the gym; pay normally and file |
YMCA | Roughly $30 to $90 for one adult, set by each Y | Not through the gym; pay normally and file |
Life Time | $72 to $219 and up for one adult | Not through the gym; pay normally and file |
Equinox | About $205 to $395 and up | Only through a Flex enrollment, not at the desk |
Blink Fitness | $15 to $27 | Only through a Flex enrollment, not at the desk |
Orangetheory | $59 to $209 depending on classes per month | Not through the studio; pay normally and file |
F45 Training | About $155 to $250 | Not through the studio; pay normally and file |
The pattern is the point. A gym does not need to be on anyone's partner list for your plan to reimburse the dues. The letter and the receipt do the work, so an independent gym down the street is on equal footing with Life Time.
What receipt does my plan want from the gym?
Your plan wants a receipt from the gym that shows the gym's name, your name, the date paid, and the amount, and a credit card statement line that says "PLANET FIT" does not meet that bar. This is the single most common reason a gym claim bounces. Most chains email a receipt for each monthly draft or show a billing history inside the member app; if yours does neither, ask the front desk for a printed payment history covering the months you are claiming. Ask for it by that name, "payment history statement," and the staff will know what you mean.
Keep the join agreement too. It shows the dues amount and the start date, which matters if your plan asks why the first charge was larger than the rest (enrollment fee plus first month).
Does an annual contract change anything?
An annual contract is fine as long as every payment date falls after the date on your letter, and the trap is the prepaid year. If you pay $1,200 up front on January 3 and your letter is dated January 10, the plan sees a purchase that came before the medical recommendation, and the whole year is out. Get the letter, then sign. Month to month billing is easier because each draft is its own dated purchase, and a letter that runs twelve months covers twelve drafts.
Watch the annual fee. Planet Fitness bills a $49 annual fee separately from dues; LA Fitness and 24 Hour Fitness bill theirs in the $60 to $70 range. Whether that fee reimburses depends on your plan, so submit it with the dues rather than assuming either way.
A worked example: a Life Time membership at $150 a month is $1,800 a year. Reimbursed from an HSA, that $1,800 comes out of money you never paid tax on. At a combined 30 percent federal and state rate, that is about $540 you keep. Add a $35 letter and you are still ahead by roughly $500.
How to get a letter for your gym membership
Request a letter at app.getburst.com/request-lmn. The form takes under two minutes and asks about the condition you are managing (high blood pressure, prediabetes, back pain, depression, and weight related conditions are the common ones) and the gym you plan to join.
A licensed clinician reviews it, and the signed letter usually lands in your inbox the same day. It costs $35, one time. If the clinician decides a letter is not appropriate, the $35 comes back automatically.
Join the gym after the letter date and pay with whatever card you like, including a rewards card or a BNPL plan. Nothing changes at the front desk.
Send Burst the gym receipt. Burst files the claim with your FSA, HSA, or HRA administrator, and the administrator pays you from the account by direct deposit or check. If the plan denies the claim, your $35 is refunded.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use my HSA card at Planet Fitness?
Planet Fitness does not run HSA or FSA cards for memberships and has no letter program on its site. Pay dues normally, keep the emailed receipts, and file with a letter dated before you joined.
Does the YMCA take HSA or FSA?
Each Y sets its own policy, and some list a Truemed program, but none run the card at the desk for dues. A Y membership reimburses the same way any gym does: letter first, pay, then claim.
Does the letter have to name my gym?
A letter that recommends a supervised exercise program for your condition supports a claim at any gym or studio. The chain partner letters are written for one chain; a letter from your doctor or from Burst is not.
I have been paying for a gym for months. Can I get those months back?
Only the payments dated after your letter can be claimed, so get the letter now and start claiming from the next draft. Past drafts are personal spending as far as your plan is concerned.
What do I tell my plan if they ask why a gym is a medical expense?
Say that a licensed clinician recommended a supervised exercise program to treat a diagnosed condition and that the letter is attached. Your plan administrator makes the final call, which is why a specific, dated letter matters.
