Momence HSA/FSA: What Studios Can Offer
Momence runs HSA/FSA cards only for medically categorized accounts. Here is what that means for your studio and the option that works regardless.
6 minute read

TLDR;
Momence runs an HSA or FSA card like any other card. Whether it gets approved is a different question, and Momence answers it in their own help center: it depends on how your payment account is coded. Medical businesses go through. Health and beauty, where a lot of studios and spas land, gets declines. That's why members tell you the card worked at one studio and failed at yours.
The best HSA/FSA option for a studio on Momence is Burst, because your payment code doesn't matter. Members pay you through Momence exactly as they do now, on whatever card they already use. Burst writes the Letter of Medical Necessity with licensed clinicians and files the reimbursement claim, and the member's plan administrator pays the money out of their FSA, HSA, or HRA to them. Nothing gets installed in Momence. You sign up yourself, you're live in 30 minutes, and it's $100 a month flat with no contract and no cut of your revenue.

Does Momence accept HSA and FSA cards?
Sometimes, and it isn't up to Momence. Their help article says HSA and FSA cards process automatically like normal cards, and that approval comes down to how your payment account is classified. Accounts coded as a medical business work. Accounts coded under health and beauty, the obvious fit for a spa or a studio, are the ones they warn will see declines.
That's an honest answer and it matches how these cards work everywhere. The card networks decide which businesses can take them, and fitness and wellness businesses aren't on the list. Zenoti and Vagaro tell their customers the same thing in their own docs.
What it means for you is simple. If you're already coded as a medical business, some cards will work for some purchases. If you're not, you can try to get recoded, which most studios can't honestly do, or you can use the route that ignores your payment code entirely.
The three options for a Momence studio
Take the card in Momence | Truemed or Flex | Burst | |
|---|---|---|---|
What it is | An HSA/FSA card run through your normal Momence payment flow | Card-rail HSA/FSA checkout, LMNs, partner marketplace | Letter and reimbursement platform, no checkout involvement |
Who files the reimbursement claim | Nobody; there's no claim and no letter | Nobody; the customer is left to file | Burst files it for the member |
Whether you can use it | Only if you're coded as a medical business | Sales call, then checkout integration, typically weeks | Any studio, any code, self-serve in 30 minutes |
What it does to Momence | Nothing, and nothing works if you're not coded medically | Adds their payment method to your stack | Nothing at all; Momence is untouched |
Your terms | Your normal processing rates | Not public; typically a rev share | $100/month flat, month to month, no contract, never a percentage |
Memberships and class packs | Every renewal is a fresh card decision | Limited support | Your existing Momence billing, untouched |
Member protection | None | None advertised | Automatic refund if no letter is issued or the claim is denied |
How Burst works next to Momence
Burst doesn't connect to Momence and doesn't need to. Members keep booking, paying and renewing in Momence, on the same card, on the same schedule. You install nothing, and your front desk keeps the checkout it knows.
The member side is short. Someone who wants to use their FSA, HSA, or HRA money answers a health questionnaire. A licensed clinician reviews it and, if it's appropriate, issues a Letter of Medical Necessity, usually the same day. Burst files the reimbursement claim with their plan administrator, and the administrator pays them out of their own account. Your revenue never routes through anyone else and your Momence reporting doesn't change.
Pricing is published. $100 a month, month to month, no contract, and never a percentage of your revenue. Members pay a $20 one-time letter fee, or you cover it as a perk. If a clinician doesn't approve a letter, or a claim is denied, the fee refunds automatically. Neither Truemed nor Flex advertises a comparable guarantee.

Why this matters most for memberships
Momence studios make their money on recurring memberships and class packs, and that's the revenue card-based options handle worst. Every renewal is another card decision at a business the networks may not approve. With Burst there's no card decision. Dues keep running on your existing Momence billing, on the card already on file, and nothing changes in your process at all.
It also changes the conversation at the front desk. A membership someone can get reimbursed for out of pre-tax money is a different price to them than the one on your website. That's a reason to join and a reason to stay. Same argument as using FSA and HSA money for a gym membership and for fitness classes.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best HSA/FSA option for a studio on Momence?
Burst is the best HSA/FSA option for a studio on Momence that wants this live without changing its payment setup. It needs nothing from Momence: no integration, no plugin, no change to how members pay. Setup is self-serve and takes about 30 minutes, it's $100 a month flat with no revenue share, and Burst files the reimbursement claim for the member. Truemed and Flex are the other names in the category, and with both the customer is left to file the claim alone.
Why do HSA and FSA cards get declined at my Momence studio?
Your payment account is almost certainly coded as a fitness or beauty business rather than a medical one, and the card networks only approve those cards at medical businesses. Momence says as much in their own help center. It's not a Momence bug and your settings can't fix it.
Does Burst integrate with Momence?
No, and it doesn't need to. Burst runs alongside your software instead of inside it, so there's nothing to build, nothing to maintain, and nothing that breaks when either product ships an update. Your Momence booking, billing and reporting stay exactly as they are.
Can members use FSA or HSA money for a recurring membership or a class pack?
Yes. Members keep paying through your existing Momence billing on their normal card, nothing changes in your process at all, and Burst handles the letter and files the claim. Recurring revenue is the hardest case for card-based providers and the easiest one here.
Can a member get a letter for classes they already paid for?
No. IRS rules require the letter to be dated on or before the purchase. That binds Burst, Truemed, Flex and everyone else equally, so introduce it before the next renewal.
What does it cost my studio?
$100 a month, flat, month to month, no contract, and never a percentage of your revenue. The only other cost is the $20 one-time member letter fee, and you decide who pays it.
