Hi, I'm Grayson. I run GTM at Burst. This guide is for anyone shopping for a Tonal, or already paying for one, who's heard FSA or HSA dollars might cover it.
Short answer. Yes. Tonal hardware, the Tonal+ membership, the Smart Accessories bundle (handles, bar, bench), and any included delivery and installation fees can all be reimbursed from your FSA or HSA with a Letter of Medical Necessity. The IRS treats Tonal as dual-purpose under Publication 502 — strength training equipment by default, but a tool that treats, mitigates, or alleviates a specific medical condition when documented. Tonal's resistance system makes the medical context particularly clear because resistance training is a recognized component of orthopedic rehabilitation, post-surgical recovery, osteopenia management, and chronic back pain treatment plans. Below is what qualifies, what your LMN needs to say, and how reimbursement actually flows.
If that already describes you, the request takes about three minutes and you can skip the rest of this guide.
What FSA and HSA cover for Tonal
Tonal sits in the same IRS category as any other home strength equipment. The IRS rule is consistent: products that treat, mitigate, or alleviate a specific medical condition are reimbursable when documented by a licensed clinician. General strength building doesn't qualify. Specific orthopedic rehabilitation, post-surgical recovery, bone density management, or chronic pain treatment all do.
The LMN is the document that creates the eligibility. Burst's clinicians write LMNs in the specific language plan administrators approve, and if our clinician doesn't approve a situation, you get a full refund.
What's eligible with an LMN
Tonal hardware. The wall-mounted unit itself.
Tonal+ membership. The monthly subscription. Reimburses on a recurring basis as long as the LMN is current (12 months typical).
Smart Accessories. Handles, bar, bench, rope. Eligible alongside the hardware.
Delivery and installation fees. When on the same receipt as the hardware.
Heart rate monitors and accessories purchased to use with Tonal.
What's not eligible, even with an LMN
Tonal apparel. Branded clothing.
Cosmetic upgrades. An upgrade for aesthetics rather than function isn't eligible.
Tonal for someone without their own LMN. The LMN covers the person whose name is on it.
Gift cards. Reimbursement requires actual product receipts.
Common reasons people get a Tonal LMN
A few of the situations that come up most often on Tonal LMNs. This isn't a checklist or medical advice, just the patterns we see:
Post-surgical strength rebuild (rotator cuff, knee replacement, spinal fusion recovery)
Chronic low back pain where resistance training is part of the PT plan
Osteopenia and osteoporosis (resistance training is a primary intervention)
Sarcopenia and age-related muscle loss
Cardiovascular reconditioning when paired with cardio
Weight management with a comorbidity
Depression or anxiety where exercise is a documented part of the treatment plan
If you're not sure whether your situation fits, that's exactly what we sanity-check before charging you. Worst case the clinician says no and you get refunded.
A few common Tonal FSA/HSA pitfalls
Forgetting the membership. A lot of people get the hardware reimbursed and don't realize the monthly Tonal+ membership reimburses too on the same LMN.
Letting the LMN expire mid-membership. LMNs typically last 12 months. After that, the next month of Tonal+ isn't covered until you refresh.
Submitting the financing statement instead of the receipt. If you finance through Affirm or a payment plan, the reimbursement is on the original Tonal receipt, not the monthly installments. Use the Tonal receipt.
Forgetting the accessories. Smart Accessories purchased to use with the LMN-covered Tonal reimburse alongside the hardware.
Tonal FSA/HSA FAQ
Is Tonal HSA eligible without an LMN?
The LMN is what makes the difference. Tonal is a strength training system, so on its own it's not eligible. With an LMN, it is.
Is the Tonal+ membership FSA eligible?
Yes, with an LMN. The membership reimburses on a recurring basis as long as the LMN is current. LMNs typically last 12 months.
Are Tonal Smart Accessories FSA eligible?
Smart Accessories purchased to use with an LMN-covered Tonal are eligible alongside the hardware.
Can I get the LMN after I already bought the Tonal?
Per IRS guidelines, LMNs must be for purchases made on or after the LMN request date. So an LMN you request today won't cover a Tonal you bought last month. If you're planning to buy soon, get the LMN first.
Is the LMN fee itself FSA/HSA eligible?
Yes.
Stop paying out-of-pocket for your Tonal
If you're shopping for a Tonal or already paying for one, an LMN turns that out-of-pocket spend into pre-tax. Around 30% savings. Get yours from Burst in under 5 minutes. If our clinician doesn't approve it, you get a full refund.
If you're not sure whether your situation fits, hit reply on any Burst email or write to support@getburst.com. We read every email ourselves.
