Best HSA/FSA Option for Recovery and Stretch Studios
Assisted stretch, compression, sauna, cold plunge and red light: what carries a letter, and how to offer HSA/FSA at your studio for $100 a month.
7 minute read

Short answer
For a recovery or stretch studio, the best HSA/FSA option in 2026 is Burst. Members keep paying the way they do today, and you're live in 30 minutes with nothing to install. It's $100 a month with no contract, plus a $20 one-time letter fee that the member or you can pay. Burst writes the letter of medical necessity and files the reimbursement claim.
Recovery studios sit in an awkward spot. Your members talk about their sessions the way they'd talk about physical therapy, and their plans treat it like a gym. The bridge between those two is a letter naming the condition, and almost nobody in this category offers one.
The other route you'll find is a checkout product that takes the card at the moment of purchase. Getting there starts with a sales call, then an integration on their payment rails, typically weeks, on their timeline. The merchant terms aren't published and typically include a rev share. And at the end of it, when your member has a letter, nobody files the claim for them. The member is left to do it alone.

What recovery services carry a letter, and what never will
Everything here depends on whether a clinician will name a condition. Recovery for training performance doesn't qualify. Recovery for a diagnosed pain condition often does, and those are frequently the same member on different days.
Service | Typical price | Can carry a letter | What the letter names |
|---|---|---|---|
Assisted stretch sessions | $50 to $110 | Often | Chronic low back pain, a mobility restriction, post-injury range of motion |
Compression therapy | $30 to $60 | Sometimes | Circulatory issues, post-surgical swelling, a diagnosed lymphatic condition |
Infrared sauna | $40 to $80 | Sometimes | A diagnosed pain or inflammatory condition under treatment |
Cold plunge | $25 to $60 | Sometimes | A specific inflammatory or pain condition, not general recovery |
Red light therapy | $40 to $90 | Sometimes | A skin or pain condition a clinician is treating |
Recovery memberships | $99 to $299 a month | Follows the services | The same condition, itemized on its own receipt |
Performance recovery, biohacking, general wellness | any | Never will | No condition, so no honest letter |
Say the split out loud on your menu. A studio that tells members "this one, because of your back" gets believed. A studio that implies the whole menu is covered loses the member the first time a plan asks a question.
Why doesn't the HSA card work at my front desk?
The card declines because the networks only approve HSA and FSA card charges at businesses coded as medical providers, or at retailers that check every item in the cart against an eligibility list in real time, and a recovery studio is neither. Memberships make it worse, because each monthly draft would need to pass that check again. A session plus a supplement on one ticket fails too.
The card was never going to be the answer here. A letter and a filed claim is, and it works the same whether you're a single room or a franchise.
The three options for a recovery studio, side by side
Option | Getting live | Cost to you | Memberships and session packs | Who files the claim | Fits |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Take the card at the desk | Recode your studio as a medical merchant and verify every charge | Not realistic for a recovery studio | Each draft would need its own real-time check | Nobody; there's no claim and no letter | Clinics billing as providers, not studios |
Truemed or Flex | Sales call, then checkout integration, typically weeks | Not public; typically a rev share | Limited support | Nobody; the customer is left to file | Online recovery brands in their partner network |
Burst | Self-serve, live in 30 minutes, no integration | $100/month, month to month, no contract; $20 one-time letter fee per member, paid by the member or by you | Works with your existing billing; nothing changes | Burst files it for the member | Stretch, compression, sauna, plunge, red light, single or multi-location |
Burst assumes nothing about your stack. Mindbody, Vagaro, Zenoti, Boulevard, Momence, a card reader at the desk: none of it changes, and nobody from your software vendor is involved.
Why Burst is the best HSA/FSA option for a recovery or stretch studio
Burst files the claim. A licensed clinician reviews each member's case and issues the letter when it's appropriate, and Burst submits the claim to the member's FSA, HSA, or HRA administrator. The member does no paperwork. With Truemed and Flex, the member does all of it.
The member's fee is refunded if it doesn't go through. No letter, or a denied claim, and the $20 comes back automatically. Neither Truemed nor Flex advertises a comparable guarantee. Recommending it never costs a member anything, which is what lets you say it out loud.
The price is published. $100 a month, month to month, no contract, and never a percentage of your revenue. You know the cost before you talk to anyone.
It covers the whole menu at once. Stretch, compression, sauna, cold plunge and red light are all handled by the same letter process, scoped to whatever the member's clinician will actually put in writing.

What does it look like for a member?
A member buys a membership or a pack the way they always have, then follows your Burst link to a two-minute intake about the condition they're managing. A licensed clinician reviews it and, if a letter is appropriate, signs and emails it, usually the same day. The member keeps paying on the card already on file. Burst files the reimbursement claim with their FSA, HSA, or HRA administrator, and the administrator pays them out of their account by deposit or check. No letter, or a denied claim, and the $20 fee refunds automatically.
One timing rule. The letter has to be dated on or before the membership or session it covers, so raise it when they buy the membership, not three months in. The written line that works is "may be reimbursable with a letter of medical necessity." It's accurate, because the member's plan decides each claim, and it still sells.
What needs to be on the receipt?
The service in plain words, the member's name, the date, the amount, your studio named. "Assisted stretch, 50 minutes" reimburses. "Recovery Ritual" doesn't.
Keep retail and supplements on their own line. A membership plus a bottle of magnesium on one charge gives the administrator a reason to question both.
What do I tell members?
Four sentences at the desk:
"If you're dealing with something a doctor is already treating, these sessions may be reimbursable with a letter of medical necessity through your FSA or HSA. We work with Burst. Two-minute intake online, a clinician reviews it, and if they write the letter, Burst files the claim for you. Twenty dollars once, and you get it back if it doesn't go through."
Put the same line on the membership page and in the welcome email. Members who came in for a specific injury are the ones who convert on it.
What does it do for memberships?
A $199 recovery membership costs a member in a combined 30 percent bracket about $139 after reimbursement, and you still collect $199. In a category where members cancel over price in month four, that's the retention lever.
At $100 a month, Burst costs you $1,200 a year. One $199 member who stays six extra months covers it.
How to offer this at your studio
Sign up at getburst.com/self-serve. About 30 minutes, and nobody from your booking software is involved.
Decide who pays the $20 one-time letter fee: members, or you as a founding-member perk.
Put your Burst link on the membership page, in the welcome email, in the renewal notice, and on a card at the desk.
Keep billing exactly as it is. Members enroll, get their letters, and Burst files their claims.
If members are already asking whether their HSA covers this, you have the demand and you're just missing the paperwork.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best HSA/FSA option for a recovery or stretch studio?
Burst. It needs nothing from your booking software, it's live in 30 minutes, it costs $100 a month flat with no revenue share, and Burst files the reimbursement claim for the member. Truemed and Flex both require a sales call and a checkout integration, don't publish their terms, and leave the member to file alone.
Is cold plunge or sauna HSA eligible?
Only when a clinician ties it to a condition they're treating and writes the letter. Bought for general recovery or performance, no. The member's plan decides each claim.
Can a recovery studio use Truemed or Flex?
Yes. It means a sales call, then a checkout integration on their card rails that typically takes weeks, on terms that aren't published and typically include a rev share. Once a member has a letter, they're left to file alone.
What do Truemed and Flex cost a recovery studio?
Neither publishes merchant pricing. Terms come through their sales process and typically include a rev share. Burst's pricing is public: $100 a month, month to month, no contract, and a $20 one-time letter fee per member.
Does this work for a membership, not just single sessions?
Yes. Members keep drafting through your existing billing on their normal card. Burst handles the letter and files the claim, and nothing in your billing changes.
Can a member get reimbursed for months they already paid?
No. The letter has to be dated on or before the sessions it covers, so raise it when they join.
Is the letter a guarantee the member gets paid back?
No. Each member's plan administrator decides the claim under its own rules. Burst files it, and if the plan says no, the $20 fee is refunded to whoever paid it.
